Why the eye needs its own plan

SJS/TEN affects mucous membranes, and the surface of the eye is one of them. During the acute illness the conjunctiva can blister and slough in the same way skin does. What happens in those first days shapes what the eye looks like years later, which is why ophthalmology reviews consistently press for an eye examination early in the admission rather than after the skin settles.

The later problems are mostly problems of the surface: a tear film that no longer works, eyelids that scar inward so lashes rub on the cornea, adhesions between the lid and the globe, and corneal scarring that distorts vision in a way glasses cannot fix. These can appear or worsen months and years after discharge, so follow-up does not stop when the skin heals.

What to ask for

  • A cornea and ocular surface specialist, rather than general ophthalmology, if one is reachable.
  • A baseline examination that is written down, so future visits have something to compare against.
  • A stated follow-up interval — and what should make you call sooner.
  • Whether scleral lens or PROSE evaluation is worth doing, and when.

That means our source sheet did not record one, not that none exists. Ask the burn unit directly which ophthalmology service they work with — they will know. The American Academy of Ophthalmology directory is also searchable by subspecialty.

What does “nearest — inferred” mean on a listing?

It means we paired that burn unit with the nearest academic eye department by geography. The two institutions may have no working relationship at all. Treat it as a lead to check, never as a referral pathway, and call before travelling.

My vision has changed since discharge. Is that expected?

Change over months and years is well described after SJS/TEN, in both directions. It is a reason to be seen, not a reason to wait. Sudden vision loss or severe eye pain is an emergency — go to emergency care, not to this website.

Going further
